DirecTV subs lose Versus over carriage fee fight

Versus HD
The LA Times is reporting today that DirecTV has removed sports network Versus from its lineup after a rate dispute with parent company Comcast became deadlocked at the end of its current contract.

Late last night, the channel went dark, replaced by an on-screen message saying, "Versus is no longer available on this channel. Comcast, which owns Versus, has forced us to take down the channel because we will not submit to their unfair and outrageous demands."  On their website, DirecTV said Comcast's demands "for what is basically a paid programming and infomercial channel with occasional sporting events of interest is simply piggish."  The satcaster claims Versus charges more than any other independent distributor, and wanted a 20 percent hike in fees.

Versus responded: "We are disappointed that DirecTV has chosen to remove Versus from its service and deny its subscribers access to our all-encompassing coverage of the sports they love."

DISH Network reportedly responded to the carriage spat on their Twitter feed, announcing that all DISH customers would get Versus and Versus HD for free for the next three months, according to Multichannel News.

No word on when, or if, a new deal can be expected or the channel restored.
