Time Warner Cable adds HLN and Turner Classic Movies in HD

HLN / Turner Classics
According to viewer reports and their own website this morning, Time Warner Cable has just added two of its promised slate of new HD channels.

Turner Classic Movies HD is now available on channel 1276 and Headline News (HLN) HD is now on channel 1351.

The website notes that both channels are part of Time Warner's HD Plus package, a tier available at an extra charge which houses channels without a standard-definition counterpart, such as MGM HD and Smithsonian Channel HD.  It is unknown whether this notation is an error, or if Time Warner is starting to break away from its 'free HD' marketing.  This appears to be an error, as the channels are available to subscribers without the HD Plus package.

Changed. The website, now

Changed. The website, now that I look at it, lists the channel at both 1110 and 1276. Not sure why that is.

I'm going to be quite upset

I'm going to be quite upset if all the promised new channels end up in the pay for HD tier. We're already negative HD channels since this summer. I thought they'd at least fill in decent MLB HD (when games are on) and ESPN News HD with garbage HD channels.

I found it quite funny that

I found it quite funny that they still list HDNet channels under their digital cable HD page on the website. I found it less funny when I realized "hey, they don't carry those channels anymore... grrr!"

I haven't been home since I heard the channels were added so I don't know for sure if they're on the HD Plus tier, but I don't subscribe to it so I guess we'll see soon enough if they are or not.

Why would anyone need Turner

Why would anyone need Turner Classic Movies in HD. The HD technology used in the 1940's and 1950's westerns was far inferior to the 1980's technology Time Warner uses...

Come on now, that's an unfair characterization...

Time Warner has a robust fiber-optic distribution system and sophisticated switched digital video technology. It all just happens to live behind a program guide and DVR software that's stuck in the era of the Apple II and Tandy 1000.

Perhaps your are right, I

Perhaps your are right, I can only speak to how I interface with cable and it is rather unimpressive. Also, maybe I am a little bitter because I live in a technological dead zone where time warner is my only non-OTA option.

However, I am still at a loss as to why Turner Classic Movies HD is what Time Warner would select to enhance their already weak HD lineup. It would seem if they were to go with a smaller lineup higher quality channels would be the way to go.

I am not even sure why there is even an HD version of Turner Calssic Movies at all, how much of their programming could there be that is HD.

Time Warner cable is not

Time Warner cable is not moving away from their free hd channels. These new channels are not added to the special HD tier that has MGM and Smithsonian HD, etc in it. They also don't list the HDnet stations... I'm not sure what website your going to, but I'm going to the timewarnercable.com website, and I also received one of their new channel lineups in the mail with they moved the stations and I never saw it on there either. I'm very happy with my Time Warner cable, I tried directv and Uverse, and I will never go back to them.

-HD has nothing to do with when the content was produced. HD by nature has to do with the resolution of the picture. The resolution of film stock is actually way higher than 1080p. Have you seen Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, or Snow White on Blu-ray? All three movies are available in 1080p high definition and look absolutely amazing even though they were produced in the 30s and 40s. I believe Wizard of Oz was actually scanned to an 8k resolution, which our TVs aren’t even capable of displaying yet. Old black and white movies look incredible in HD when properly transferred!

I think the misconception is

I think the misconception is that some movies on Turner Classics HD don't fill out the sides of a widescreen TV, but many older movies were shot in a full-screen 1.33:1 ratio, not widescreen like modern movies are. Even though they leave open space on the sides of the screen, they very well may be shown in high-definition at a clarity better than TCM's regular channel. If you go look at 1080p screenshots from Casablanca, The Wizard Of Oz or It's A Wonderful Life on Blu-ray, you'll see a lot of intricate detail you don't get on SD television or DVD.

According to everything I

According to everything I have read about TCM HD they are not showing movies in native HD they are infact upconverting from SD. I did some comparing between the SD digital channel and the HD Channel and visually there was little to no difference between the two.

That very well may be. I'm

That very well may be. I'm sure the studios may not be going back and doing HD remasters of some of the films TCM airs. I'm just glad they don't feel the need to squeeze or squash the picture to fill the frame like TBS did to its non-HD content a few years ago. TCM HD I believe is fairly new to HD so I'm sure they'll flip over more HD as they go. Glad it's there though.

Ahhh yes, the good old

Ahhh yes, the good old aspect ratio debacle. I love how some people believe HD is only 16x9, or 1.78:1. They've always got to find a way to complain about or get rid of those pesky 'black bars' on 1.33 or 2.35 filmed content.

Even better is all the peeps who bought full frame versions of their favorite DVDs to fill up their standard tube televisions. How do those full frame discs look now on your new widescreen TV? Hahaha

That's another pet peeve of

That's another pet peeve of mine... when HBO or other networks crop a 2.35:1 film to 1.78:1 to fill the HDTV frame. Drives me nuts. Part of the reason why I wanted to get a Blu-ray player.

The next 2 HD channels probably coming this week or early next week is Disney XD HD and Cartoon Network HD. Their probably add 2 a week or so till the end of the year.

I certainly hope so. Would

I certainly hope so. Would be good PR for them, considering the satellite companies have been in a bit of a new channel drought lately.

I wish they'd add better channels though. Hard to get excited over Cartoon Network or Disney XD. Looking more for AMC or other good channels like that. I would really love it if they would start getting some of the Viacom HD channels like Comedy Central, especially since they went through such an ugly public spat with Viacom over their contract not too long ago.

I can understand TCM HD not

I can understand TCM HD not having a lot of the old movies in HD, but I don't understand why HLN HD has no programming in HD and calls themselves HLN HD. I scanned over 24 straight hours of HLN HD programming in the remote's guide, and saw not one program presented in HD. Do they have ANYTHING in HD ? That's really disappointing.

I don't know if TCM HD is

I don't know if TCM HD is actually HD or not, but I saw a Cary Grant movie on this morning that occupied the entire widescreen frame (save for very tiny black bars on the top and bottom). It didn't look stretched, but it may have been upconverted. It looked better than the SD channel though, so I'm happy.

As far as HLN HD, I think it's similar to CNN and Fox News' HD channels early on, where the picture wasn't always (if at all) HD, but they used the 16x9 frame for graphics or other content. I'm sure eventually it'll get better. Speaking of extra content on an HD channel, I have to say I'm really digging what WFRV is doing with the empty space on the sides of their HD frame during news, putting weather content in there. Good use of the dead space until they upgrade to full HD studio equipment (if ever). Only qualm is that once they started doing that, I realized how cropped off the edges of an HD picture are on my old tube-style HDTV.
