From their website (help.rr.com):
"As of June 23, 2008, Road Runner will no longer offer Newsgroups, however users can subscribe on their own to third party News providers.

Why is Road Runner discontinuing their own Newsgroups service?
Due to low subscriber usage Road Runner has decided to discontinue Newsgroups service as of June 23, 2008.

If I still want a news service, what can I do?
Subscribers can choose to use a third party service and purchase on their own through that service."

For those of you who don't know what Newsgroups are, wikipedia has a good explanation. They are indeed something of a dinosaur in terms of user friendliness when compared to the multitude of internet forums out there like this one, but for those of us who started getting "online" during the days of the old dial up bulletin boards, newsgroups were a revolutionary way to communicate and find information. I can't say that I use them with any regularity any more- not nearly enough to consider any type of third party provider- but I will sorely miss having them there and readily available via my broadband service provider.

I started using newsgroups

I started using newsgroups back in 1989 or so. I use them less these days, but some newsgroups I use aren't available as mail lists.

I will look at the third party providers, but I will also be looking into dropping RoadRunner, although until now I was reasonably satisfied with them. If we switch to DSL, I'll also be moving our cable television as well. At least I never did go with Roadrunner for our telephone service.

Keith: It looks good to me. Obviously a great improvement over what it was. I like the colors, the bug on the right with the simple temp and time, the panning out, and the text scroll at the bottom....
TvBoy: Damn, For as long as it took to get that thing launched, I was pretty disappointed. Not that impressive. Better than the last set, but not worth the price paid.
